Advanced Standing Students

$

Sometimes called ‘credit transfer’, advanced standing is recognition of prior study at a university or TAFE.

Students applying for transfer or credit need to complete an application for Advanced Standing/course exemptions and must supply original or certified copies of academic transcripts from previous tertiary study.

If you have completed previous tertiary studies in a relevant field (such as the built environment or design), please attend our Advanced Standing Advisory Day. Advisory Day is held prior to O-Week and is advertised closer to the date on the BE Events page.

Previous study in a related area may mean you are given credit for some core (compulsory) courses and therefore you may not need to enrol in the standard first year program. That is why attendance at the advanced standing advisory day is recommended.

Students who have completed previous tertiary studies in an unrelated field (such as arts, science, medicine or law) do not need to attend the Advanced Standing Advisory Day. You may still apply for Advanced Standing, but you may do so directly with the Built Environment Student Centre. You will not need to attend on the day because your credit transfer will be for general education and elective courses, rather than core courses. You will need to enrol in the standard set of first year courses, according to your program listing in the UNSW Online Handbook. You should make your application for electives and general education credits before the commencement of semester 2 2013.

Please contact the BE Student Centre if you are not sure if you should attend the Advanced Standing Advisory Day.

  • Help you develop leadership skills
  • Make you more work-ready for when you leave
  • Give you insight into the professional practice of other built environment disciplines
  • Help you understand the contribution of your discipline in an interdisciplinary context
  • Hone your research skills
  • Introduce you to interdisciplinary enquiry and research and its capacity to inform your professional practice
  • Give you the opportunity to tackle complex, real world projects and apply your academic coursework knowledge

Alternative Admission

What is the alternative Admission Scheme?

UNSW Built Environment recognises that your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent may not reflect your potential in creative thinking and making.

We are pleased to offer you the alternative admission scheme to give you the opportunity to submit a portfolio of your work to support your ATAR.

We are looking for demonstrable potential in creative thinking and making. Your portfolio submission should be a selection of your best own creations and should describe where your creative imagination and skills lie.

The alternative admission scheme is optional. Applicants who do not submit an application under this scheme will be assessed on their ATAR (or equivalent). The alternative admission scheme is available only to domestic applicants.

Following your submission, assessors will review your portfolio and cover letter and may invite you for an interview.

How are places allocated?

Depending on available places, applicants who have submitted a portfolio and are within 10 points of the cut-off will be re-ranked based on a combination of a portfolio and interview scores and ATAR (or equivalent).

How do I submit my portfolio?

You must have your chosen UNSW BE degree as a UAC preference to be eligible.

Once you have lodged a UAC application for your preferred BE degree, and wish to apply under the alternative admission scheme, simply click here to submit your portfolio or view the specific requirements for your degree below.

Please click on your degree of interest to view the portfolio submission requirements:

To find out more information on how to put a good portfolio together, come along to the free lecture 'Portfolio Entry for Design Degrees' from 1:30pm-2pm on 6 September 2014. The lecture will be presented by Bruce Watson, Discipline Director, Interior Architecture.

Important dates:

  • Portfolio submissions open from 25 August and close 14 November 2014
  • On time UAC applications close 26 September 2014
  • Selected candidates will receive interview notifications during the week commencing 1 December 2014.
  • Interviews will be conducted in the week commencing 8 December 2014

General advice:

Regardless of which degree you wish to submit a portfolio for, we strongly encourage you to:

The interview will be a short conversation with you and UNSW staff. You should demonstrate your research, understanding and interest in this field of study. The interview is your chance to convey your strengths for study in your chosen discipline.

Amanda Sun

President

Name: Amanda Sun

Degree: Architectural Studies

Year: 2

I believe that it is important to bring the Built Environment disciplines together as a community to form a better integrated faculty, and would love the opportunity be a part of the society executive that aims to achieve this goal. I am passionate and committed to improving the university experience for my peers and I bring my leadership experience on the UNSW Architecture Society executive to the table.

Kara Virik

Vice President

Name: Kara Lena Virik

Degree: Landscape Architecture

Year: 2

I'm Kara Lena Virik, a third year student at UNSW, studying my 2nd year of Landscape Architecture. Originally from Texas, I found myself studying the entirety of my degree in Australia. I'm confident, enthusiastic, friendly and driven. I'm interested in fostering the creativity within the Built Environment faculty to create an active, vibrant and beneficial society. I would like to be a part of the committee as a strong voice to effectively communicate between students and faculty members.

Judith Elijah

Secretary

Name: Judith Elijah

Degree: Planning

Year: 2

I would absolutely love to use the knowledge and experience I have to make valuable contributions that will get the society running successfully. As the current President of the Tea Society, I have worked with my team to sign up over 300 official members this year and run large events both on and off campus on a weekly basis. I also have a lot of knowledge about Arc and how clubs function, and my current casual employment at Arc’s Grad Shop will see us getting some faculty merchandise in no time! In addition, I have been a student representative on the BE Board for the past two years and will continue to make sure the voice of our students is heard at these meetings. I am very friendly and approachable, and most importantly, I am passionate about what I do and would love to make our presence known amongst the wider community whilst bringing everyone together from the Built Environment. I believe I have the drive to take this society forward as an Arc Constituent Club.

Maria Packman

Treasurer

Name: Maria Packman

Degree: Industrial Design

Year: 2

I am a motivated and energetic individual who takes pride in being a team player, and who can work well under stress.  Coming towards the end of my 2nd year of Industrial Design I feel the need to place myself in a position where I can benefit the needs of not only myself but my fellow peers. I see myself as a patient, punctual and enthusiastic individual (having a musical theatre background to prove it) and I use my spare time reading through blogs and journals for information and inspiration relating to design (not limited to simply industrial). My friendly positive attitude and willingness to benefit others is something I see would definitely be highly beneficial for the Built Environment Society. I find it easy to converse with others and would really love the opportunity to better display my skills.

Geordie Gilmour

Arc Delegate

Name: Geordie Gilmour

Degree: Planning

Year: 1

Hi, I’m Geordie, a first-year Planning student. I see our new faculty society as a fantastic opportunity to build and enhance social, professional, and interdisciplinary connections. It has been great to be part of the building momentum leading to the creation of this society, and I am excited for the range of new initiatives we can bring to the faculty. When not stressing out over assignments, I have really enjoyed my time so far at UNSW and in the Built Environment Faculty. I am looking forward to this opportunity to help current and future students get as much out of their university experience as possible. I see this as a great opportunity for us collectively to generate good ideas and see them through to fruition. I believe I am an approachable person and a good communicator. As a Planning student I plan on getting things done for our new society!

Bec Gerrard

Faculty Liason

Name: Bec Gerrard

Degree: Industrial Design

I work in retail, and at the university as a student ambassador for the Future Student's Office. I am keen to learn and socialize with students of other disciplines, and to be a part of a much-needed society in UNSW. I hope to bring my honest, straightforward attitude to the executive, if elected, and am looking forward to attending any events even if I'm not.

Ben Roberts

So far I have found my time learning with friends and peers in the BE fascinating. This has created the desire to participate in my learning environment with a stronger connection to the course and faculty and being a part of the BE student society executive would be a great privilege.
